Everything You Need to Know About Polypropylene (PP Tape)

PP strap is a thermoplastic polymer created from polypropylene monomers. It serves a wide range of purposes, but is especially valuable for packaging consumer products, plastic components for different sectors—including the automotive sector—and more. … Polypropylene was first identified in 1951, with Paul Hogan and Robert Banks credited as its main inventors. The material quickly gained popularity, and commercial production started just three years after its discovery. By 1957, its use was expanding, and today, it stands as one of the most commonly manufactured strapping materials worldwide.

PP polypropylene strapping can be applied manually or with automated equipment. PP strap is commonly used to secure boxes, packages, and pallets. For the fastest and most efficient box strapping, automatic or semi-automatic machines—such as the HIPO semi-automatic packing machine—are recommended. Both boxes and pallets can also be strapped using a battery strapping tool. While battery strapping tools are suitable for pallets, the quickest pallet strapping method may involve a semi-automatic pallet strapping machine, which enables the strap to be threaded under the pallet and sealed (welded) with the help of a strapping machine. Our COMBO pallet strapping machine is an example of such equipment.

Key Properties of Polypropylene

The first notable characteristic is its resistance to chemicals. Polypropylene does not easily react with diluted acids and bases, making it ideal for packaging liquids like cleaning agents, first aid supplies, and similar products. Another important trait is its combination of flexibility and toughness. In engineering, toughness refers to a material’s ability to deform without breaking. A third property is shape retention—polypropylene keeps its form after twisting or bending, making it more durable than many other materials. The fourth feature is its insulating capability. Its high resistance to electricity makes it well-suited for use in electronic components. The fifth property is its transparency. While polypropylene can be made transparent, it is typically produced in opaque forms. This characteristic is useful for applications where light transmission is necessary.

Why Is Polypropylene So Widely Used?

Polypropylene is primarily utilized in industrial settings. Its distinctive features and adaptability to various manufacturing processes make it an essential material for numerous uses. Another advantage is its versatility—it can be processed as either a plastic or a fiber. In recent years, polypropylene has replaced many traditional materials, particularly in the packaging sector.

What Types of Polypropylene Exist?

There are two main categories of polypropylene: homopolymers and copolymers. Copolymers are further divided into block copolymers and random copolymers. Each type is better suited for specific applications. Polypropylene is often called the “steel” of the plastics industry because it can be tailored or modified in many ways to meet particular needs. This is usually accomplished by adding certain additives or by using specialized processing methods. This adaptability is one of its most important qualities.
