Scissor lifts for indoor and outdoor applications

A scissor lift lifts personnel and equipment to elevated work areas on a secure platform. The scissor lifts in this category are self-propelled, battery powered, and can be operated from the platform or from the ground.

The AS-X6 is a compact scissor lift designed for indoor use, offering a working height of 7.8 m and a maximum load of 230 kg. The AS-X1012 is a larger scissor lift suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, with a working height of 12 m and a rated capacity of 320 kg.

Select your scissor lift based on the height, load capacity, and work environment. The comparison table below the products displays the main technical specifications side by side.

How an electric scissor lift operates

SMITH AS-X6 electric scissor lift, lowered, with extension deck extendedAn electric scissor lift moves and lifts using battery power, with no combustion engine. The operator can drive and raise the lift from the platform, allowing the lift to move with the platform elevated, but only at low speed.

The scissor arms beneath the platform extend vertically, keeping the platform directly above the chassis. Working height is the platform height plus about 2 m, which is the reach of a person standing on the platform: 7.8 m for the AS-X6 and 12 m for the AS-X1012.

The platform control box allows you to drive, steer, and lift the platform from above, so you can position the lift and adjust the height without stepping off. The ground control station on the chassis raises and lowers the platform from below and is used for pre-shift safety checks.

Since the platform rises straight up, you need to drive the chassis directly beneath your work area before lifting. For tasks along a row, such as lights or shelving, position the lift at one end, raise the platform, and move from point to point without lowering. With the platform raised, the lift travels at a maximum of 0.8 km/h. Work must pause while the lift is moving, and it should only be driven on a solid, level surface that has been inspected.

The extension deck slides out from the end of the platform, providing an extra 0.9 m on the AS-X6 and 1.0 m on the AS-X1012. This feature is helpful for reaching over obstacles like conveyor belts or fixed machinery.

Battery operation means no exhaust emissions and minimal noise, making the lift suitable for use in busy warehouses and production areas while other activities continue nearby.

AS-X6 or AS-X1012: selecting the right aerial work platform

SMITH AS-X6 scissor lift with platform fully raisedIf you need an 8 m scissor lift, the AS-X6 is the closest option: working height 7.8 m, rated for 230 kg, and holds two people on the platform for indoor use only. The AS-X1012 is the 12 m scissor lift for both indoor and outdoor work, with a 320 kg capacity, supporting two people indoors and one person outdoors.

Choose your aerial work platform based on the working height required, the load to be lifted, and the available space. The length is important for fitting into freight elevators and navigating tight corners: the AS-X6 is 1.84 m long, while the AS-X1012 is 2.40 m.

The main distinction between these models is their maximum height. The AS-X6 platform rises to 5.8 m, allowing work up to about 7.8 m, such as installing lighting or maintaining shelving in lower-ceilinged areas. The AS-X1012 platform reaches 10 m, supporting work up to about 12 m in tall warehouses or on building exteriors.

Platform size is also important for daily tasks. The AS-X6 offers a 1.65 × 0.76 m platform, fitting two people and their tools for most indoor jobs. The AS-X1012 has a larger 2.25 × 1.15 m platform, so two people can work side by side with more materials. This extra space is useful for installing long pipes or handling bulky items, reducing the number of trips up and down.

The width of the lift determines where it can be used. The AS-X6 is 0.76 m wide, fitting through most doorways and narrow aisles, which is practical for older buildings and tight storage spaces; always measure the clear opening of a doorway, not just the door leaf. The AS-X1012 is 1.15 m wide and requires wider access. Only the AS-X1012 is approved for outdoor use. When stowed, it travels at up to 3.2 km/h, compared to 4.0 km/h for the AS-X6, which can be important if the lift needs to cross a large facility several times a day.

AS-X6 and AS-X1012: technical comparison

The table below compares the main technical specifications of the AS-X6 and AS-X1012 scissor lifts. You can review working height, platform size, load capacity, drive speeds, and where each model is suitable for use.

To use the comparison table, start by identifying the working height you need. Next, check if outdoor use is required, as only the AS-X1012 is rated for outdoor operation. Then compare the width and length of each model with your doorways, aisles, and freight elevators. Finally, ensure the rated capacity matches the combined weight of personnel, tools, and materials you plan to bring onto the platform.

Indoor scissor lift or outdoor use: limitations

The AS-X6 is intended for indoor use only, accommodating two people on the platform. The AS-X1012 can also be used outdoors, but only with one person on the platform. Both models require a solid, level surface: maximum work slope is 3 degrees front-to-back and 1.5 degrees side-to-side, so even a yard or parking lot that appears level may be too steep sideways.

When operating the AS-X1012 outdoors, always check wind conditions before raising the platform: it must not be elevated if wind speeds may exceed 12.5 m/s, which is the maximum wind speed for safe operation as specified by the manufacturer. Wind at height is usually stronger than at ground level and gusts can occur suddenly, so check the forecast with a safety margin and lower the platform if wind increases.

A solid, stable surface is critical for safe outdoor operation. Soft ground, loose gravel, or grass can shift under the wheels and cause the lift to tip. On any surface, if the tilt alarm sounds, lower the platform and move the lift to level ground before continuing.

When working indoors, inspect the area for drains, cable channels, and open pits along the route and at the work location before raising the platform. Keep people and forklifts clear of the area beneath the elevated platform, and use barriers if there is regular traffic.

Outdoors, the maximum sideways force allowed from people on the platform is half of what is permitted indoors, so using tools to push or pull at height is more limited outside. The AS-X6 is designed strictly for indoor use, so it cannot be used outdoors, even briefly or in calm weather.

Choosing a scissor lift or another type of aerial platform

A scissor lift raises a large work platform vertically, making it ideal for tasks like ceiling work, lighting, shelving, installations, or facade projects where the lift can be positioned directly under the job. The platform accommodates two people and their tools, which is not possible with a ladder or a single-person mast lift.

For both indoor and outdoor jobs that require a stable, roomy platform and where the lift can be placed under the work area, a scissor lift is a practical solution.

A boom lift is made to reach up and over obstacles such as equipment or shelving, but its basket is smaller and usually holds less weight than a scissor lift platform. If you need to access a light above machinery that the lift cannot drive under, a boom lift can reach over it. A scissor lift, on the other hand, provides a larger platform for two people and their materials, which is better for tasks needing more space or teamwork.

A mast lift is designed for very tight spaces where only one person needs to work. Its footprint is smaller than a scissor lift, so it fits between racks or in narrow aisles. However, the platform is small and only supports one person with light tools. If your job requires more than one worker or heavier materials, a scissor lift or another platform type is necessary.

Scaffolding is best for long-term work in a single spot, such as painting or repairs that last several days. It takes time to assemble and take down, which makes sense if the job stays in one area. A scissor lift is much quicker to move: when you finish one section, you can drive to the next in minutes without dismantling anything. For example, in a warehouse where lights are being replaced along a row, a scissor lift saves significant time compared to moving scaffolding.

A ladder works for short tasks at low heights, but for longer jobs or those involving tools and materials, a platform with guardrails is safer and more efficient. On a scissor lift platform, you have a stable surface and can use both hands for your work. For instance, installing an overhead cable tray is much easier and safer from a platform than from a ladder.

Working height, platform size, and load limits

Start by identifying the highest point you need to reach: the platform should rise to about 2 m below that, and having extra margin makes the job easier. Indoors, also check the available headroom: people on the raised platform must clear beams, pipes, and lights, and the platform should never be raised into anything above it.

The rated capacity is the maximum total weight the platform can carry, including people, tools, and materials. Fewer people are allowed on the platform outdoors than indoors, and the platform should not be raised if wind speeds may exceed the rated limit.

For example, if you need to change lights at 7 m, you need a platform height of about 5 m. The AS-X6, with its 5.8 m platform, covers this with enough margin for safe and comfortable work. If your lights are at 11 m, you need a platform height of about 9 m, which only the AS-X1012, with its 10 m platform, can provide.

The total weight on the platform adds up quickly. Two people weighing about 90 kg each, plus 40 kg of tools, already total 220 kg. This is within the 230 kg capacity of the AS-X6, but leaves little room for extra materials. If you need to bring more material up, the AS-X1012 with its 320 kg capacity is the better option.

The extension deck on both lifts is rated for a maximum of 120 kg. This means heavy materials or equipment must stay on the main platform, not the extension. For example, if you need to reach over a conveyor to install a light fixture, only lighter tools and materials should be placed on the extension deck to avoid overloading it.

Batteries and driving performance

The AS-X6 uses six 4 V batteries, and the AS-X1012 uses four 6 V batteries; both are 24 V, 200 Ah systems. The AS-X6 can drive up to 4.0 km/h when stowed and 0.8 km/h with the platform raised. The AS-X1012 drives up to 3.2 km/h stowed and 0.8 km/h raised.

When stowed, both lifts can climb slopes up to 25%. The batteries are recharged from a standard outlet between shifts.

Charge the batteries after every shift and let the charging cycle finish before using the lift again. Batteries left uncharged lose capacity over time, shortening their lifespan. Plan to charge in a dry, ventilated area near an outlet, away from traffic and other equipment, to keep charging safe and prevent cables from becoming a trip hazard.

Always drive between work areas with the platform lowered; the raised speed is only for short moves along a row on a firm, level floor. Never raise the platform on a ramp, even if the lift can climb it while stowed. Before driving for the first time, check the slope of ramps and the condition of the route, including thresholds and cable covers.

Building access and site requirements

Before purchasing a scissor lift, check the width of doors and aisles along the route to the work area. The floor must support the weight of the lift and its load, especially on mezzanines, ramps, or older floors.

Inspect the route for thresholds, ramps, and uneven surfaces, and check the height of doors and passages: with the rails folded, both lifts are 1.84 m tall.

The weight of the lift and its load is distributed over four wheels. On a mezzanine or older floor, consult the building manager to confirm the floor’s load capacity and compare it to the lift’s weight with a full load before moving it onto the area. If the lift needs to use a freight elevator, check both the elevator’s capacity and the size of its doors.

Plan how the lift will be unloaded from the truck and brought into the building: it cannot climb stairs, and any ramp on the route must be within its slope rating, with the platform lowered. Decide where the lift will be parked between jobs, out of the way of regular traffic.

What affects the price of a scissor lift

The price of a scissor lift is determined by working height, rated capacity, platform size, and whether it is rated for indoor or outdoor use. The AS-X1012 reaches higher and carries more than the AS-X6, and its price reflects those features. For indoor work up to about 7.8 m, the AS-X6 provides the same function in a smaller footprint; for higher work or outdoor use, only the AS-X1012 of these two models is suitable.

The current price for each scissor lift for sale is shown on its product card above. Before buying a scissor lift, compare the working height and load requirements with the table above. Both models include a 12-month warranty.

The main ongoing costs are the electricity used for charging and, over time, the batteries themselves. Batteries are the primary wear part in an electric scissor lift and will eventually need replacement, depending on how often the lift is charged and discharged.

Lifts that raise people must be inspected regularly by a qualified person, as required by national regulations. These inspections are essential for keeping the lift in service and ensuring it is safe to use. When planning to add a lift to your facility, be sure to include the cost and scheduling of these inspections.

Operator training and inspection

Anyone operating a scissor lift must be trained on the specific machine and must read the manual before use. A pre-operation inspection should be performed at the start of each work shift to check all functions and safety features.

The inspection at the start of each shift includes both control stations and their emergency stops, the tires, guardrails and gate, battery charge, any leaks, alarms, and the pothole guards. Charge the battery if it is low and repair any faulty alarms before using the lift.

Training covers how to use the controls, load limits, wind and slope restrictions, and how to lower the platform from the ground in an emergency. It is good practice to have a second person on the ground who knows how to use the emergency lowering function. Keep a brief log of daily inspections and any issues found, so repairs are not missed and the lift remains safe to use.

Checklist before you order a scissor lift

Before ordering, measure the highest point you need to reach, the height of beams, pipes, and lights nearby, the width and height of all doors along the route, the width of aisles, the slope and type of floor, and decide if you will use the lift indoors or outdoors. For example, a door with a clear opening of 0.9 m allows the AS-X6 to pass through easily, while the AS-X1012 requires a clear opening well over 1.15 m.

The comparison table above shows which of the two lifts meets your height, load, and workspace requirements.

Describe your work in your inquiry: how many people will be on the platform, what tools and how much material they need to bring, how long they will stay at height, and how often the lift will be moved. For example, if two people need to install cable trays along a long run, a larger platform can save time. Also state whether the lift will stay in one building or be moved between sites, as it will need to be transported by truck.

If you plan to use the lift outdoors, consider how exposed the area is to wind. Plan where the charging outlet will be and where the lift will be parked overnight, away from other equipment. Decide in advance who will be trained to operate the lift and perform daily inspections.

Safety systems and operation rules

Ground control box of the SMITH AS-X6 showing the key switch, emergency stop, and displayBoth scissor lifts are equipped with safety systems: pothole guards that deploy when the platform rises, a tilt alarm, a descent alarm, emergency lowering from the ground, and a safety arm that supports the scissors before anyone works under the raised platform.

The machine is not a crane. Do not place ladders or scaffolds on the platform. The maximum sideways manual force from the platform is 400 N indoors, and 200 N outdoors for the AS-X1012.

The pothole guards deploy when the platform is raised and close most of the gap under the chassis. If a wheel drops into a shallow hole or off a small step, the guard contacts the floor and limits how far the machine can tilt. They help reduce the risk from a missed hole; they are not intended for driving over obstacles.

The tilt alarm sounds if the chassis is on too steep a slope. If you hear the alarm, lower the platform and move the lift to level ground before continuing work. The descent alarm alerts people below that the platform is coming down, so they can stay clear.

Emergency lowering can be done from the ground if the operator cannot lower the platform from above. People on the ground should know where the emergency lowering controls are and how to use them. Always keep the platform gate closed, stand only on the platform floor, and never climb on the guardrails.
