Use-Case – HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine vs AUTOMA Automatic Strapping Machine

  • More than double strapping speed
  • Lower labour cost per carton
  • Fewer mis-straps and rework
  • Brushless motor cuts downtime
  • Fast payback under four months

The Challenge

A mid-sized 3PL based in Rotterdam operated a high-volume carton line using an entry-level automatic strapping machine similar to the AUTOMA model. During busy periods, cartons would back up at the strapping station, leading to bottlenecks and overtime hours. Management faced a choice: either add a second budget machine or upgrade to a premium system by replacing the current one.

The main criteria for their decision were throughput (straps per minute), labor cost per strapped carton, and downtime caused by handling mistakes. They evaluated their AUTOMA-type setup against the HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine to determine if the higher investment would deliver a quick return.

Product B: AUTOMA Automatic Strapping Machine

The AUTOMA automatic strapping machine achieves up to 28–30 straps per minute, using PP strap in 9–12 mm widths with adjustable strap tension up to 90 kg. Its table stands at 750 mm high, and the standard arch size is 800 × 600 mm, accommodating most carton sizes handled by the 3PL.

With an actual utilization rate of 60%, the effective throughput is about 18 straps per minute (30 × 0.6), which means approximately 10,800 cartons per 10-hour shift for single-strap cartons. Operators often had to stop to fix mis-feeds or redo loose straps, which increased hidden labor and caused minor but accumulating delays.

Priced at €2,599, the AUTOMA appears cost-effective at first glance. However, its slower cycle speed means the 3PL must either accept longer processing times or assign an extra operator during peak periods, raising daily labor expenses.

Product A: HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine

The HIPO ULTRA Auto Strapping Machine increases throughput to about 72–75 cycles per minute, more than doubling the output of the AUTOMA. With PLC controls, brushless DC motors, and automatic strap feeding, it maintains reliable operation even during long shifts with frequent changes in SKU.

At 60% real-world utilization, the HIPO ULTRA operates at around 43 straps per minute (72 × 0.6), resulting in roughly 25,800–27,000 cartons per 10-hour shift for single-strap cartons. Its consistent bottom hot-melt sealing with at least 90% adhesion and precise placement (no more than 2 mm deviation) reduces rework and minimizes product handling damage.

The worktable is 850 mm high, and the standard arch size is 650 × 500 mm, fitting the 3PL’s carton range while supporting ergonomic operation. With a price tag of €3,799, the HIPO ULTRA costs more than the AUTOMA, but its higher speed and automation lower labor demands and overtime.

ROI & Value Analysis

Assumptions:
10-hour shift, one strap per carton, labor cost €25 per hour, one operator per line.

Product B Performance:

Product A Performance:

As a result, HIPO ULTRA processes about 15,000 more cartons per day within the same shift, or enables the 3PL to complete the same workload in less time, reducing overtime costs.

Investment Comparison:
Product B price (AUTOMA): €2,599
Product A price (HIPO ULTRA): €3,799
Price difference: €1,200
Conservative daily savings with Product A (eliminated helper + fewer errors): €80–€100 per day
Payback period for the price difference: less than 4 months even at moderate volumes; even faster during high-volume peaks.

Verdict

Opt for Product B if your available budget is strictly below €3,000 and your production line handles fewer than 5,000 cartons per day with no plans for expansion or seasonal increases.

Select Product A if you operate a high-volume 3PL or logistics facility where throughput, reliable automation, and minimizing labor cost per carton are priorities. For any line consistently processing 8,000–10,000 cartons per day or more, the HIPO ULTRA’s faster operation, dependable brushless motor, and lower rate of rework make it the better long-term choice.

“After we upgraded to the HIPO ULTRA, our afternoon bottleneck was eliminated, we no longer needed an extra helper during peak hours, and we still have room to expand. The equipment paid for itself within just a few months.” — Marko Jansen, Operations Manager, DeltaLog 3PL / Rotterdam, NL
